Callie ( A Short Story )

Dear Readers, Today I hope to change your view on life. And no matter how drab and bland your life might seem. No matter how different you feel. You can always find a way to be  happy. How you might wonder will I teach you how to be happy? Well by nothing other than telling you the story of a hen. A true story. Her name is Callie. And she was one of many Hens.

                               🐔

Chapter One. I Spy with My two eyes a lot of yellow.

Callie Leghorn was one of thousands and thousands of baby chicks born that spring filled March Morning. But Callie you see was different. Yes she looked the same. But inside Callie was unique. When the egg Callie hatched out of was Laid her mother the hen who layed it had been unique. Her mother had been Magical. Her mother could Understand and communicate with humans. Her mother was very clever. You see unfortunately only one of Callies mothers eggs was magical and that is the egg the Callie hatched out of. Only you might wonder How had her mother become magical? Well its a long story but to put it in short Her mothers father had been one of the only male chicks that had survived. He had eaten a secret tiny stone in his regular chick crumble while just a chick. It made him smart. He could understand humans. he could communicate with them. He out of so many male chicks that day he was picked to be the Hatchery's Leghorn Chickens breeding flock Main rooster. Why and how he was picked out of so many? I believe though I'm not quite certain that he was able to make the hatchery worker think he would be a great breeding flock rooster. And he was. Well unfortunately Callie's mother and her father are no longer alive. But Callie was and this is Callie's story. And you see out of All the eggs layer by so many ehsn that had bred with Callies mothers father only Callies mother and Callie where magical. I myself am not exactly sure why. But not Callie, Nor any of the other chicks saw The Emerald colored tall crisp grass that morning. Nor the huge bright shining star in the sky that gave warmth and light. Nor the worms that burrowed just below the surface of the soft dirt. Nor the fly's that buzzed lazily in the blue sky. No they did not even feel the warmth of a mother hens wing. No Callie and her Friends saw non of this. All Callie saw was lots of gray and white and of course yellow. Callie was born inside a Chick hatchery. But Callie was luckier than some of the chicks. Because she was a girl. All the Boy chicks went away to some place Callie did not know about. And Callie was a White Leghorn. So she would not become a roast chicken dinner. Till of course she was  older and could no longer lay eggs very good. but she did not know any of this. Even from the start Callie was different from the other chicks. And not just in appearance but in attitude and of course in her inner self. She peeped louder not that anyone noticed. She stood up straiter not that anyone noticed, and she walked better not that anyone noticed. Callie stayed in a giant hatcher machine for a while. It was boring in here! She walked around, she saw some chicks hatching out of their eggs, she pecked at the eggs and said Hello. The chicks inside the eggs she pecked replied "Help where tired get us out of here!" some of them where saying "Momma where is momma?" Callie had thought the exact same thing where was there momma? surly this dull gray and boring machine they where in was not mama! But no matter how hard Callie looked she could not find any mama. She peeped and peeped and peeped. But then again so did all the other chicks. After a year or so ( at least that's how it felt to Callie, when in reality it was less than 5 minutes.) she sat down tired of looking. Ovoisly she thought there was no mama here yet. But where was her mama? just as she began to fall asleep a burst of cold air filled the incubator. She looked up and what did she see? Well she was not intirely sure what it was.If she had known what to look for she would of known that the creature that had opened the incubator door and let in the cold air was a human. TO be more exact it was a hatchery worker. This hatchery worker began to move all the chicks out of the giant Incubator. There where hundreds of chicks including Callie. When the man picked her up She stood up straighter, and Peeped louder. But he of course did not care he tossed her into a large tray on wheels she was smooshed against so many other chicks more so than she had been In the incubator. All the chicks where leghorns. But not all the chicks where girls like Callie. They where brought to a room where each one of the chicks was picked up hurriedly checked and tossed into a tray. Callie was tossed into a tray marked females. She watched as the other tray marked Males was taken into another room. She was very curious to what would happen to those boys oh little did little Callie know. Lets just say that those male chicks whether old or young did not meet happy ends well that is all except one but that's another story. Anyway Back to Callie. Callie was moved to a large room she looked around and saw many many boxes with holes in them. You see none of there other chicks knew what boxes where but of course Callie did because her Grandfather had eaten the one and only magical stone on this earth. The stone was magical and tiny inside it there was power to whoever consumed it to have incredible knowledge. So know lucky Callie Knew what boxes where. But she also knew a great many other things. The more she looked the more she knew. This was not what the other chicks thought the more the other chicks looked the more they wonderd. Callie saw many hatchery workers. She saw a great many converter belts as well. Callie and all the rest of the chicks in the box which all together they where around 1000 where put in several different boxes around 20 of them. Callie was put in the last box along with 50 something other chicks.  Then from there Callie could not see much but ill tell you what happened don't you worry. Callie and all the chicks in her box and all the other 19 boxes of chicks where put on a truck. Which drove to where another truck waited to drive Callie and all the other chicks to there final destination. Which was A giant Egg Farm In Iowa. Callie knew a lot but she could not possibly know what her future held. For the egg farm was not the best place...

ORPHAN DEFINITION: PARENT LESS. LOST. SAD. BAD.

Even though she called all the children at the orphanage Lazy Boogers.  You see Ophiliea Was not ordinary
