Science Video Blog of the week (:

Hello so today I watched a Ted Ed Video her is what I learned from it it was about what makes food spicy:

So why Does Wasabi make you cry?

And black paper make your mouth burn? her are my answers:

SO before I start even tough humans say "It tastes Spicy" Spicy is not actually a tase.

Instead what's really happing that The certain compounds in spicy food activate the type of sensory Nerons called Polymodal  Nociceptors.  You have these all over your body,  Including your mouth and nose.  And they are the same receptors that are activated in extreme heat,  So for example when you eat a Chili Pepper Your moth feels like its burning  because your brain actually thinks it is. (:  The opposite happens when you eat something with mentonal in it this cool minty compound.  It's activating your cold reseptors.  When these heat sensitive receptors are activated your body really thinks its mouth is burning which is Kinda crazy in my opinion.  SO it reacts accordingly as if it is in contact with a dangerous heat source.  This is why you start to sweat and your heart starts beating faster.  But not all spicy foods are spicy in the same way.  And the difference lies in the types of compounds.   The  capsaicin and  piperine found in black and chili peppers  are made up of larger heavier compounds called  Alkyladmides and those mostly stay in your mouth. but mustard horseradish and wasabi are made up of smaller molecules called isothiocyanates. that easily flow up into your nose.  This is why black pepper burns your mouth and wasabi burns your nose.
